Start with Taste and smell - A banana powder should taste and smell like bananas. Our powder is made from ripened bananas so it has a very sweet banana flavor.
Color - Banana powder should be a light cream color like banana. If it is dried at too high of heat, it will turn darker brown.
Banana Flour vs. Freeze-dried Banana Powder - Banana flour is made from drying unripened green bananas and is typically used to replace other flours in baked goods. Our powder is made from freeze-dried ripened bananas so it is very sweet and great for adding banana flavor to things like smoothies but is not meant to be a flour replacement.
Ingredient list - Many banana powders will have citric acid added in to prevent the bananas from turning brown as they are dried. We've found that when the banana powder is properly dried and packaged citric acid is not needed.
Other things to consider - Lastly, when evaluating the quality of a banana powder it is important to understand how and where the product was grown. Was it grown using Organic farming practices and is it certified USDA Organic? Was it grown in good quality soil, or was it grown in highly polluted areas (such as China where heavy metals such as lead can be a major concern). We source our bananas from USDA Organic Certified banana farms in South America.
